A practical order of operations for Appalachian properties — what to do first, what has a hard deadline, and what people wish they had done in October.
Jump to the checklistMost winter prep can be done whenever you get to it. Two things cannot, and both catch people out because the deadline is invisible until it has passed.
Levelling, gravel pads, concrete and drainage all need workable ground. Once it is frozen, every one of them becomes harder, slower and more expensive — and concrete needs above-freezing temperatures to cure properly. If a building is going in this year, the pad is the thing with the real deadline, not the order.
A building takes weeks to build and more to schedule and deliver. Ordering in November for winter protection generally does not work. Our order-before-winter page calculates the actual dates from current lead times.
The expensive mistake is nearly always the same one: leaving small engines out. A mower, generator or pressure washer left through a wet Appalachian winter usually needs carburettor work in spring, and the repair frequently costs a meaningful fraction of what the machine is worth. If you only do one thing on this page, get engines under cover.

Either stabilise the fuel or run the tank dry — do one, not neither. Modern fuel degrades and gums up carburettors within months. Remove batteries and store them somewhere that does not freeze.
ATVs, UTVs, boats, mowers with seats. Moisture gets into foam and connectors and does not leave. These benefit more from being enclosed than almost anything else you own.
Condensation rusts them slowly enough that nobody notices until spring. A dry, ventilated building solves it; a sealed plastic tub in an unheated shed can make it worse by trapping moisture.
Off the ground, under cover, with air moving through it — and not stacked against the house, which invites both moisture and pests indoors. A lean-to or a dedicated rack under a shed overhang works well.
Doors that bind or will not latch are usually telling you the building has shifted or settled. Worth investigating before snow adds load, not after.
Walk the perimeter during heavy rain. Water running toward the building, or pooling against it, is what rots a floor from below. Regrading or a simple swale uphill is cheap compared to a floor.
Close gaps that let in wind, snow and rodents. Do not seal it airtight — an unventilated building sweats, and condensation does more damage over a winter than a draught does.
