Tips for Greenhouse Gardeners

Finally! You got that dream greenhouse and it’s time to start potting things up; but where do you start?

  1. Heat

The goal of any greenhouse is to remain warm in the winter and temperate in the summer! That means light transferable walls and roofing are essential for capturing sunlight and allowing the building to naturally heat. Our greenhouses are built with this principle in mind, with 22 gauge polycarbonate panels and a 10 Year Limited Warranty–your greenhouse panels won’t lose more than 10% of light transmissibility in 10 years. In addition, you can opt to upgrade your greenhouse even further with a heater to ensure perfect temperature regulation.

  1. Ventilation

Greenhouse ventilation is important to ensure your plants are receiving enough airflow. This airflow helps strengthen root systems and stems for hardening off seedlings, or promoting growth for houseplants, and keeping the structure at a reasonable temperature in the summer. Greenhouses from Ascential Buildings are thankfully equipped with a 12” x 12” fan with thermostat, with the option to add a second 12” x 12” fan and thermostat combo.

  1. Watering system

Watering your plants is perhaps the most notable chore in maintaining a greenhouse; but it doesn’t have to be. With a built in watering and misting system, you can quit lugging around a watercan and craning your neck to angle it just right.

Pro tip → following the watering requirements for your individual plants for optimal growth is always recommended. Many plants have differing needs; some may need higher levels of soil moisture to thrive, while others may prefer desert-like dryness.

  1. Storage

Utilizing all the space in your greenhouse is one of the best ways to keep your plants healthy and happy. We recommend using the space underneath your standard greenhouse shelving to store additional pots, soil, soil amendments, and gardening tools!

Pro tip → don’t store seeds in your greenhouse! Keep them in a cooler space such as a basement or root cellar to avoid them sprouting prematurely in the package or losing their viability.
